By Sally Jones
(Sung to the tune of “Farewell to Nova Scotia”)
Farewell dear Sears Island, Sears Island adieu,
the Maine DOT’s gonna sacrifice you –
Well, we’ve loved you and done just as much as we can
But the Maine DOT’s got a massive port plan.
Farewell to those walks on a clear fall day and
farewell to the sounds of the trees and the bay –
For how can an island stay wild and green
with a deepwater port shoved into her spleen?
Farewell dear Sears Island, Sears Island goodbye,
come concrete and steel, you surely will die –
You were such a beauty, you were such a friend
but they want your life darling, to build turbines for wind.
Sears Island, we’ll never walk ‘round you again,
the birds and the fishes will flee if they can –
The Department of Transport thinks they’re being clever
to mar all your peacefulness and beauty forever.
