The sun was shining, people were swimming, children were playing on the beach, and others were walking their dogs – lots of people enjoying the island on a lovely summer afternoon. On the causeway, people set up tables, the band set up their equipment, and the food truck prepared to serve food. Chris Buchanan welcomed everyone then introduced Cloe Chunn who talked about all the birds, mammals, reptiles, marine life, trees and plants that would be lost if the wind port is built on the island. David Italiaander talked about the different roles of Friends of Sears Island, Alliance for Sears Island, and Protect Sears Island. The microphone was then opened to everyone and Jula Moll-Rocek talked about different species of fungi he has found on the island while conducting a survey for the Farlow Herbarium at Harvard. He and his partner had put on display about 10 different fungi that will be donated to the Farlow Herbarium. During the afternoon, T-shirts and lawn signs were purchased, many people asked questions about the wind port and fact sheets handed out. Late afternoon there was a short deluge of rain that drove some people back to their cars, but the band played on.
Thank you Chris Buchanan for organizing another event to raise awareness of the threat to Sears Island!
